This week the stay-at-home order was extended until June 4th for the Philadelphia region. Turning on the TV for an update on the world may get us feeling down and thinking that we are stuck in this nightmare forever. Remember, the words of Rocky Balboa, “The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place. And I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees, and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me or nobody is going to hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit, its about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!” We will beat this and in some ways we already are.
If you look back at history, you will know what I am talking about. The Spanish Flu of 1918 revolutionized healthcare. Some of the most brilliant inventions came out of the Great Depression such as the Car Radio, Board Games like Monopoly and the Chocolate Chip Cookie. We have seen great transformations that come out of horrific events.
When you are in time of crisis you are forced to make changes to adapt to new needs. I remember years ago when I needed to occasionally work from home to maintain work life balance, I always said there was no reason for me to be in the office. I had all the tools I needed to work remotely. Now that we don’t have a choice companies are making their entire workforce remote. We have the technology so why not, why would it need to change post pandemic? Think about how much money you can save from commuting, wear and tear of your car, and office space. I see remote offices becoming the new norm. There is going to be a larger need for remote workers to handle videoconferencing and workflow systems. Since your whole household is using the internet all day long there is going to be a larger need in cloud computing and other areas. We will be seeing the invention of new technologies and new industries entering the marketplace.
In the healthcare space, look at what this crisis has done to Telehealth? Before COVID-19 you couldn’t talk to your doctor over Zoom or FaceTime but now you can. In the past there were many conversations about telehealth and its possibilities but due to the COVID-19 Pandemic the federal government had lifted many restrictions on the use of telemedicine in order to make it happen. Due to this pandemic we will probably see Telehealth as an alternative option for patients. Until there is a vaccine for COVID-19 we will all live our lives differently by proceeding with caution. But look at the positive side. So many things have been done to alter the way we normally do things to adjust to our new way of life. Can’t wait to see more inventions and technologies created for the better good of our society.
